Seedbox Basics

What is a seedbox?

The strictest definition would be “a computer running bittorrent software,” but the normal connotation is a system in a datacenter running bittorrent.

What would I want a seedbox?

  • Better performance.  You’re sharing at 1gbps.  Sure, if you want to move something around, you are limited by whatever the slowest link is, but the idea is that you’re earning a much better ratio because your uplink is so much better.
  • Greater privacy.  You’re seeding away on another continent, and what you might move home with an encrypted connection is now one else’s business.
  • Load is off somewhere else, not on your PC.
  • If your ISP has a network cap, then moving something across its network once is better than continuously moving it for months.
